Booth Muirie’s innovative BML Systems have been specified on Matalan’s striking new headquarters’ building at Knowsley Industrial Park near Liverpool. The rainscreen system, featuring aluminium composite material (ACM), provides flat, grey cladding to the glass-fronted building’s feature fins, and a striking flash of red for the central lift shaft, which also exposes colour to the interior of the building.

BML60 was installed to 700m2 of walls in two colours; ‘black grey’ for the feature fins and ‘traffic red’ for the lift shaft walls. BML systems offer design freedom through a choice of panels, details and fixing assemblies, whilst utilising world-leading composite materials that are inherently flat, rigid and uniform in colour.

Matalan’s new head office and warehousing facility has been built to secure the future growth of the business as a leading multi-channel retailer. It has been designed by Fletcher Rae Architects to a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, incorporating sustainable technologies for power, heating and cooling, with the potential for future onsite energy generation. The £19 million development has been built on a 15-acre site, creating 400 new jobs in addition to 1200 head office staff.

Project details

Building envelope specialist Longworth were appointed by main contractors Morgan Sindall to install the rainscreen cladding, which proved to be quite a challenge. This was in part due to the requirement for the design and installation of secondary steel, which allowed fixing to the substantial steel building frame. The BML rail and bracket system was fixed to this additional vertical and horizontal steelwork, enabling the façade to be wrapped around all four sides of the feature fins and lift shaft walls.

Lee Smith, Contract Manager for Longworth was delighted with the performance of the BML60 system and his experience of working with Booth Muirie, commenting, “The service and communication from Booth Muirie was excellent throughout the duration of the design and install”. Booth Muirie has a proven track record in rainscreen cladding, using modern CAD software and a highly experienced design team to devise and manufacture rainscreen solutions for the most individual of designs.

BML60 is an open-joint rainscreen system with variable joint widths. It can be used for vertical wall cladding using landscape panels and is also suited to fascia applications. All BML Systems enable a fast, trouble-free installation, which is critical to the successful completion of projects within agreed timescales. Inherent support systems and accessories simplify the specification, procurement and installation of rainscreen façades, whilst ensuring the compatibility of all components. Wind load calculation can be provided with BML60, with the system having been tested to CWCT guidelines as an integral part of a through-wall solution.

ALPOLIC®/fr was used to manufacture the BML60 system used on the new Matalan HQ building. ALPOLIC®/fr is a world-renowned, fire-rated ACM that is exclusive to Booth Muirie and is composed of a non-combustible mineral core sandwiched between two skins of 0.5mm thick aluminium. The lightweight, rigid material features a smooth, uniform coating and is available in a range of colours and finishes, including solid, metallic and sparkling colours. It can even be supplied with a range of convincing timber or stone effects.
