In the interests of providing unequivocal information about the fire performance of BML Systems and the specific wall assemblies that it can form part of, we are sharing the results from an unprecedented number of tests that have taken place featuring Booth Muirie BML Systems.

The testing has been carried out in conjunction with Kingspan Insulation UK, Siderise and Mitsubishi. All listed systems have been tested according to the BS 8414 test standard and have satisfied the requirements of BR 135 but some are awaiting the final reports to be published. Report references will be updated as they are published.

The performance of a wall assembly in respect to its’ resistance to spread of fire is influenced heavily by the type of panel system as well as the combustible or non-combustible nature of the materials used to form the rainscreen panels and other layers of the wall.  Testing has evidenced that even some systems formed from A1 and A2 materials can fail to meet the requirements of BR135 when tested according to the BS 8414 methodology.

An extended field of application report or desk top study (DTS) from a suitably qualified body will be required if there is ANY variance between the system proposed and any system tested.

A DTS is a comparative assessment, between a system or systems that have been tested and the system that is fixed or proposed, showing that there is no expected adverse impact on the fixed or proposed system based on the differences in construction.  Such variances include but are not limited to: panel material type and brand, panel modules; panel system; panel joints; cavity size, cavity barrier type and brand; cavity barrier frequency; position of cavity barriers relative to panel joints, insulation type; insulation thickness; support rail & bracket centres; and nature of the backing wall.  

Desk top studies are very much project specific and not transferable from one project to another.  Any desktop study/report should be produced by a recognised authority. The minimum requirement as set by Central Government is for a Chartered Fire Engineer to undertake such studies. It should include the comparison between the different elements of the systems, including cavity barriers and their locations, the insulation product within the steel frame system, and the inner lining.  Although the full-scale tests do not take into account any form of suppression system that may be installed in the building, or any other active life safety measures, such aspects may provide further support to any case that may be presented.
